Sliman Mansour (born 1947), is a Palestinian painter, considered an important figure among contemporary Palestinian artists. Mansour is considered an artist of the intifada whose work gave visual expression to the cultural concept of sumud. Palestinian artist and scholar Samia Halaby has identified Mansour as part of the Liberation Art Movement and cites his important work as an artist and cultural practitioner before and after the Intifada. During the Intifada, Mansour was part of the "New Visions" group of Palestinian artists. This collective turned to earthworks and mixed media and assemblage using materials derived from the Palestinian environment in order to boycott Israeli art supplies in protest of the ongoing occupation. In 1988 he made a series of four paintings on destroyed Palestinian villages, the four villages being Yibna, Yalo, Imwas and Bayt Dajan.

He is a co-author of Both Sides of Peace: Israeli and Palestinian Political Poster Art, published in 1998 by the Contemporary Art Museum with University of Washington Press. More on Suleiman Mansour

Damascus Public Baths (Hammams) were commonly used in Damascus as a civilized phenomena that denotes the interest of the Damascenes in their health, and cleanness of bodies. Going to the bath was a religious and social habit of life in the Orient in general and in Damascus in particular.

With very limited means of entertainment in a closed society, women changed the visit to the bath into an opportunity to meet other women, and to deepen social relations. By time, public baths were linked to several social occasions like marriages, births, and preparations for feasts. Women used to spend long hours in the bath consuming all the time specified for them; usually from midday to the evening. More on Hammams

Willy Aractingi, (Lebanese, 1930-2003)
Blue Panther, c. 1994
Oil on canvas
31 ½ x 39 1/8 in. (80 x 99.5cm.)
Private collection

Willy Aractingi, (Lebanese, 1930-2003) was born in New York in 1930, Aractingi was raised in Cairo, studied in Grasse, before finally settling in Beirut in the late 1940s.
Aractingi undertook painting at a very young age. His works are often differentiated by his use of unique colour gradations, bold pigments and recurring use of nature.

Aractingi’s greatest artistic achievement was painting Jean de la Fontaine's (French, 1621 - 1695) entire collection of 244 fables on individual canvases. He embarked on this mamoth project titled Magnum Opus in January 1989, whilst residing in France. Seven years and 244 canvases later, he completed the ambitious project in 1995 on the 300th anniversary of De La Fontaine’s death.

Aractingi's works are extensively inspired by fictional stories and fables. He generously provides his audience a gateway into the creases of a fantasy world inhabited by folk creatures and copious animals; all brought to life using his vivid brushstrokes.  He continued to paint insistently up until his death in 2003; depicting Antar and Abla, Geha, Tarzan, Adam and Eve, and a plethora of animals throughout his oeuvre.  Following his death, the artist's family estate donated 230 of his works to the Sursock Museum in Beirut. In 2017, the museum mounted a retrospective curated by Yasmine Chemali who gathered some 120 works under the title Les Mondes de Willy Aractingi. Sotheby's is privileged to be offering this important and rare work from the estate of the artist. More on Willy Aractingi

Albert André
Untitled
Oil on canvas
22 inches high and 26 inches
Private collection

Albert André ( 24 May 1869 – 11 July 1954) was a French Post-Impressionist figurative painter. He produced portraits of Pierre-Auguste Renoir, his closest friend, and Claude Monet.

Born in Lyon, he initially trained there designing patterns for silk. In 1889 he moved to Paris to enroll at the Académie Julian. There he met Paul Ranson, Louis Valtat, and Georges d'Espagnat. He also associated with the group known as Les Nabis which included Bonnard, Vuillard, Denis, Vallotton, Marquet and Signac.

In 1894, he exhibited five paintings at the Salon des Indépendants where he caught the eye of Renoir. Despite their age difference, a solid friendship united them until Renoir's death in 1919, providing André with guidance in his career. Through Renoir's art dealer André was able to sell many of his paintings in the United States. Between 1895 and 1901, he exhibited at the Salon des Cent, the Salon des Indépendants, the Exposition d'Art Nouveau, the Salon d'Automne, and, in 1904, at the Salon de la Libre Esthétique in Brussels. In 1912, Durand-Ruel enabled André to exhibit his work in New York City and in 1913, he was selected to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the Libre Esthétique in Brussels, showcasing works on a theme of southern France.

Demobilized from World War I in 1917, he moved to Marseille and then to the village of Laudun in the Gard. He became curator of the art museum of Bagnols-sur-Cèze, where he remained until his death.

André died on 11 July 1954 at 85 years old, shortly before his works were due to be showcased at the Avignon Museum. More on Albert André
