Whitby is a town in North Yorkshire, historic county of Yorkshire, northeastern England. It is situated at the mouth of the River Esk on the North Sea.

Ralph Hedley (31 December 1848 – 14 June 1913) was a realist painter, woodcarver and illustrator, best known for his paintings portraying scenes of everyday life in the North East of England.

Born in Gilling West near Richmond, North Yorkshire, Ralph and his parents moved to Newcastle upon Tyne around 1850, on the wave of industrial opportunity. Aged about 13, he was apprenticed to Thomas Tweedy in his carving workshops, simultaneously studying art and design at the 'Government school' in Newcastle, and attending evening classes at the Life School under William Bell Scott. At the age of 14 he was awarded a bronze medal by government's Department of Art and Science.

After concluding his apprenticeship, Hedley established a successful woodcarving business, whilst also producing lithographs for the local press and taking every opportunity to work as an artist. He had the first of many paintings accepted for exhibition at the Royal Academy in 1879. Joining with Henry Hetherington Emmerson and Robert Jobling, they founded the Bewick Club which encouraged and exhibited the work of the local artists of the North East, staging the first exhibition in 1884. More on Ralph Hedley

The Zouaves were a class of light infantry regiments of the French Army serving between 1830 and 1962 and linked to French North Africa, as well as some units of other countries modelled upon them. The zouaves, along with the indigenous Tirailleurs Algeriens, were among the most decorated units of the French Army. More on the Zouave 

Francis William Topham (Leeds 15 April 1808 – 31 March 1877 Córdoba) was an English watercolourist and engraver.

His early in his life he was articled to an uncle who was a writing engraver. Around 1830 he came to London, and at first found employment in engraving coats-of-arms. He then entered the service of Messrs. Fenner & Sears, engravers and publishers. Moving employment to James Sprent Virtue, he engraved landscapes after William Henry Bartlett and Thomas Allom.

His career as watercolourist appears to have started self-taught, helped by practice at the meetings of the Artists' Society in Clipstone Street. In 1850 he was one of Charles Dickens's company of actors. Towards the end of 1852 he went for a few months to Spain in search of the picturesque.

In the winter of 1876 Topham again went to Spain, dying in Córdoba in 1877, and was buried in the Protestant cemetery there. More on Francis William Topham

Jules Worms was born into a family of Parisian shopkeepers in the early years of the July Monarchy, a period in French history that is characterized by the cultivation of a thriving comic tradition in the visual arts. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, beginning in 1849 under Jean-Baptiste-Adolf Lafrosse, and made his debut at the Salon in 1859. In the early 1860s, Worms made the first of many trips to Spain, and was immediately drawn to Spanish culture and customs. As a result, his paintings of Spanish subjects with a subtle humorous comment on contemporary romance garnered much appreciation.

Worms became a member of the Society of French Artists in 1883, and won awards in 1867, 1868, 1869 and was made a member of the Legion of Honour in 1876. In addition to this work in the Syracuse University Art Collection, his work is held in the permanent collections of the Dijon Museum, the Museum of Modern Art in Paris and at the Nancy Museum. Jack Vettriano, OBE (né Jack Hoggan, born 17 November 1951), is a Scottish painter. His 1992 painting, The Singing Butler, became a best-selling image in Britain.

Jack Vettriano grew up in the industrial seaside town of Methil, Fife. He was raised in poverty, and lived with his mother, father and older brother in a spartan miner’s cottage, sharing a bed with his brother and wearing hand-me-down clothes. From the age of 10, his father sent him out to earn money. His father took half his earnings. Vettriano left school at 16.

Much of his art education came from studying paintings at the Kirkcaldy Museum and Art Gallery. Controversial. Professional art critics do not seem to like his work, but the public does. 

In February 2011, it was announced that Vettriano's self-portrait The Weight would be displayed at the re-opened Scottish National Portrait Gallery from November 2011, the first time he had exhibited at a national gallery. First Minister, Alex Salmond said of Vettriano, "He is a wonderful artist of considerable talent and achievement and this is a magnificent tribute to the special place he holds in the hearts of people in Scotland."

In September 2013, a major retrospective of Vettriano's work opened at Glasgow's Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. 'Jack Vettriano: A Retrospective' ran until 23 February 2014 and featured over 100 works. More on Jack Vettriano

Harutyun Khachatryan ( born 9 January 1955) is an Armenian film director, script writer, director of photography, film producer, General director of the Golden Apricot Yerevan International Film Festival, Meritorious Artist of the Republic of Armenia and voting Member of European Film Academy since 2006.

Khachatryan was born in Akhalkalak (Georgian SSR, now Georgia). 1981 he graduated from the Film Department of Cultural Faculty of the Armenian State Pedagogical Institute in Yerevan, Armenia. Worked as an assistant director and film-director at the Armenian Documentary Studio and later - at Hayfilm/Armenfilm Studio. 2003 Kachatryan was awarded by State Premium of Armenia and became Meritorious Artiste of Republic of Armenia. Eugen von Blaas was famed for depicting beautiful Italian women at work or in the company of admiring suitors. Anticipation shows a dark haired young woman leaning her elbow on a balustrade overlooking the Venetian lagoon. She dreamily gazes towards the water, where a gondola is just coming into view. The precise technique and bright palette of Blaas’ Venetian genre scenes were in tune with the Venetian tradition of painting. Famed for his depictions of everyday life in Venice, Blaas' very commercial subjects and finely painted, vividly coloured canvases found a ready market among the wealthy travellers and tourists visiting the city. Above all he strove to capture the inherent beauty of the Italian women with vignettes of their conversations in the street or courting with lovers. More on Eugen von Blaas

The woman in black, the leering coupler, "in a nun's costume", could be the eponymous procuress, while the man to her right, "wearing a black beret and a doublet with slashed sleeves", has been identified as a self portrait of the artist. 


The man, a soldier, in the red jacket is fondling the young woman's breast and dropping a coin into her outstretched hand. According to Benjamin Binstock the painting could be understood as a psychological portrait of his adopted family. Vermeer is in the painting as a musician, in the employ of the madam. Vermeer used his family as models; the whore could be Vermeer's wife Catherina and the lewd soldier her brother Willem. More on this painting

Johannes, Jan or Johan Vermeer (1632 – December 1675) was a Dutch painter who specialized in domestic interior scenes of middle-class life. Vermeer was a moderately successful provincial genre painter in his lifetime. He evidently was not wealthy, leaving his wife and children in debt at his death, perhaps because he produced relatively few paintings.

Vermeer worked slowly and with great care, and frequently used very expensive pigments. He is particularly renowned for his masterly treatment and use of light in his work.

He was recognized during his lifetime in Delft and The Hague, but his modest celebrity gave way to obscurity after his death. In the 19th century, Vermeer was rediscovered by Gustav Friedrich Waagen and Théophile Thoré-Bürger, who published an essay attributing 66 pictures to him, although only 34 paintings are universally attributed to him today. Since that time, Vermeer's reputation has grown, and he is now acknowledged as one of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age. More Vermeer

Ray McCarty. As early as the age of five, McCarty began demonstrating his artistic talent. Raised in the mountains of northern Utah, his first paintings were sketches of the American West inspired in part by his outlaw ancestry, The McCarty Gang, partners in crime with Butch Cassidy.

Ray graduated from University with a degree in fine art. As a student Ray studied the great masters in Spain and France and his work began to show the distinct influences of Modigliani, Renoir and Toulouse-Lautrec. Women in Victorian settings began to take precedence over the cowboys and Indians of his earlier Western paintings. His experimentation for a brief period in non-objective art provided the freedom of technique that contributed to his unique style.Ray McCarty

Ray’s dramatic use of line and color, along with foreshortening techniques make his work instantly recognizable. We can compare his vision with that of Toulouse-Lautrec in his treatment of the female face & form. McCarty uses live models in all of his portraits. His canvasses capture emotion in all of the many human palettes: proud and haughty, sensual and sexually confident, shy and humble, reflective and contemplative.

During the early 1970s, McCarty relocated to Las Vegas. He was acutely aware of the city’s renegade past and fascinated with its brash, glitzy attitude and began to paint scenes from the town’s early gambling saloons. More on  Ray McCarty

Pascale Taurua , born in 1961 is a French painter elected Miss New Caledonia 1977 , then Miss France 1978 . She succeeds Veronica Bundle, Miss France 1977. She is the 48 th Miss France.

A few months after her election, she prefers to return to New Caledonia rather than ensure her role as Miss France in France for a year. Pascale Taurua is now an artist-painter.

Pascale Taurua started painting a young age. She graduated from the Conservatory of Art of Papeete in Tahiti. She lives in Pau in the south of France. She has made painting her profession since 1996. Her work is mainly focused on figurative art. She exhibits her paintings in the Pacific and Metropolitan France. Evgeniy Monahov was born in Moscow, Russia in 1974, and developed a love for painting at a very young age. In 1996 he completed the first stage of his formal studies by graduating from the Moscow College of Art. Demonstrating a unique talent and advanced artistic skills, Evgeniy was invited to enroll in the prestigious Surikov Academy & Art Institute in Moscow. He completed his graduate studies with highest honors in 2002.

Upon graduation, Evgeniy embarked on his painting career by attaining membership in the Creative Union of the Artists of Russia and the International Federation of the Union of Artists.

By 2004 Evgeniy had successfully exhibited his paintings in galleries in London, Dublin, and Japan. Additionally, he was a prominent artist participant in the international exhibition “Russian Summer in Santa Fe” held in New Mexico. The year 2006 led to opportunities to exhibit in France on the Champs Elysees, Cannes, Honfleur, and Courcheval. He continues to exhibit in galleries throughout France.

Evgeniy’s work is primarily inspired by a group of artists known as the Neo-Romantic painters of the 19th Century. While neo-Romanticism can refer to all phases of the arts, it continued to be a major force in academic art through the 19th century. 

Monahov’s paintings consist of quick, loose brushstrokes with the main focus of attention receiving greater detail. His sensitivity is conveyed by graceful expressions of facial tone. More on Evgeniy Monahov
