Our Art News Letter For March 13, 2015 - Dig It!, Peter Max, Henri Matisse, Egypt, Armory Show, Pierre Bonnard, TEFAF, Picasso

Shown here is a rare signed copy of Picasso’s The Old Jew (1903), the original of which is on exhibit at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow. “Le Vieux Juif” was painted at a time when Picasso (1881-1973) was absorbed in depicting suffering and torment, including images of abject poverty, decrepit old age, bitter cold, starvation. Nancy Sinatra & Peter Max
Peter Max, one of the most famous artists alive, paid tribute to Frank Sinatra in the way he knows best; through his art. Max produced 27 paintings of Ol’ Blue Eyes and hosted a private screening on March 2nd attended by Nancy Sinatra and Tony Danza, to preview his work. This is all to honor Sinatra’s 100th anniversary. Now through September 4, 2015, New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center

Accessible art: Misr International Films makes available its productions on YouTube. major works of the late and renowned filmmaker were made available on YouTube. This time, one is to expect that YouTube would harbour the films for good, as they were uploaded by Misr International Films (MIF); Chahine’s very own company that was established in 1972 and that produced his major works.

TEFAF, the grande dame of art fairs, opened its doors in Maastricht yesterday, welcoming throngs of well-heeled collectors. The mood on the floor was as cheery as the extravagant tulip displays that have become something of a TEFAF signature. Peter Max: A Retrospective, 1960-2015” is on display at Charlotte Fine Art Gallery from March 13-22, with Max scheduled to stop by to greet guests March 21 and 22. The exhibit and Meet the Artist receptions are free and open to the public, but RSVPs are required for the latter.

The influence of Arab, African and Asian art on Henri Matisse is the theme of a major collection of the French artist's work that has gone on show in Rome.

The exhibition, "Matisse Arabesque", runs until June 21st at the Scuderie del Quirinale, the former stables of Italy's presidential palace which have been transformed into a museum that boasts spectacular views over the Eternal City

Henri Matisse told critic Gaston Diehl in a letter dated 1947 that "la révélation m'est venue d'Orient": but this revelation was by no means a sudden shock. As we can tell from his paintings and drawings, it was spawned by a growing familiarity with the Orient and gradually developed in the course of the artist's travels, encounters and visits to exhibitions and shows. Specialists debate what to do with growing collections of excavated materials at the “Dig It!” conference in London
“We have archival material in museums that are becoming increasingly inaccessible because of the lack of specialist archaeology curators and we have museums that are ceasing to collect this material which has created a backlog that has nowhere to go,” said Duncan Brown, the head of archaeological archives at English Heritage... Liverpool’s World Museum has won a £300,000 grant to expand its ancient Egypt gallery

The addition will enabling the museum to display around 4,000 objects, some of which have never been publicly shown before, the grant will be used to restore a gallery space that has been closed for 35 years, and which will now house 12 mummies, double the number currently on view. The improvements will also tell the fascinating story of how Liverpool acquired its world-renowned collection and aims to recreate the grandeur of the display that was lost when the Museum was hit by an incendiary bomb during the May Blitz in the Second World War.
