Muhlstock was foremost among a coterie of Jewish artists who gave Montreal a lively and informed art scene starting in the 1930s and continuing into the 1960s. Along with Ernst Neumann, Rita Briansky, Sam Borenstein, and others, Muhlstock brought fresh ideas and original expression to urban Montreal. His work was acquired for the National Gallery, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and the Montreal Museum of Fine Art. Muhlstock and his friends collected European and Quebec painters like Miro and Dallaire. Muhlstock’s work made its Toronto debut at the Picture Loan Society, where Borduas and Riopelle also first showed in Toronto.
