01 Work, The Art of War, Klaudii Vasilievich Lebedev's The Fall of Novgorod, with footnotes

Klaudii Vasilievich Lebedev, (Russian, 1852 - 1916)
The Fall of Novgorod, c. 1891
Oil on canvas
64 3/8 x 101 3/4 in.
Chazen Museum of Art, University of Wisconsin

The Fall of Novgorod depicts the capture of the City of Novgorod by Ivan III in 1478. Ivan had the city bell—a symbol of self-governance by the citizens—taken down and transported to Moscow. In the painting Marfa Boretskaya, the mayor's widow and leader of the resistance, stands in silent outrage as Ivan's troops remove the bell and shackle her partisans. Klaudii Lebedev paints the wintry, gray, snow-covered day of the victory of the Muscovites and lavishes attention on the details of dress in the spirit of historical accuracy.

Klavdy Vasilyevich Lebedev (1852 – 1916) was a Russian painter. He was a member of the Peredvizhniki movement.

Lebedev came from a peasant family, studied at the Stroganov Moscow State Academy of Arts and Industry and the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture under Vasily Perov and Evgraf Sorokin. From 1890 he taught there.

In 1881 he was awarded a large silver medal of the Imperial Academy of Arts and received the title of a class artist. Member of The Wanderers group (1891).

The title of academician of painting of the Imperial Academy of Arts (1897). The title of full member of the Academy of Arts (1906).

01 Work, The art of War, William of Clermont defends Ptolemais, with Footnotes

Papety Dominique (1815-1849), Marseilles, 1815; Marseilles, 1849
WILLIAM OF CLERMONT DEFENDS PTOLEMAIS.1291, c. 1845
Oil on canvas
173 H; 315L
Versailles; national museum of the castles of Versailles and Trianon

Ptolemais was an ancient port city on the Canaanite coast in the region of Palestine, in the location of the present-day city of Acre. It was also called Ptolemais in Canaan. It was an Ancient bishopric, which became a double Catholic titular see. In the Middle Ages, it was known as Acre amongst some Western European crusaders, who started a new, militantly Latin chapter there. More on Ptolemais

The siege of Acre (also called the fall of Acre) took place in 1291 and resulted in the Crusaders losing control of Acre to the Mamluks. It is considered one of the most important battles of the period. Although the crusading movement continued for several more centuries, the capture of the city marked the end of further crusades to the Levant. When Acre fell, the Crusaders lost their last major stronghold of the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem. They still maintained a fortress at the northern city of Tartus (today in north-western Syria), engaged in some coastal raids, and attempted an incursion from the tiny island of Ruad, but when they lost that as well in 1302 in the siege of Ruad, the Crusaders no longer controlled any part of the Holy Land. More on The siege of Acre

Guillaume de Beaujeu, aka William of Clermont (c. 1230 – 1291) was the 21st Grand Master of the Knights Templar, from 1273 until his death during the siege of Acre in 1291. He was the last Grand Master to preside in Palestine.

He was in the Kingdom of Jerusalem from 1260 or 1261, where he served as commander of the in 1271, and 1272. He defended Charles of Anjou's claim to the crown of Jerusalem against that of his rival Hugh III of Cyprus. This stance significantly sharpened political divisions in the Crusader States, but also ensured Charles' continued material support, much needed at this time. William's partisan role certainly contributed to his lack of credibility between 1289 and 1291, when he warned in vain of the imminent Mamluk attacks thanks to information he had obtained from spies operating in the Egyptian army. William died on May 18, 1291, during the Mamluk siege of Acre. More on Guillaume de Beaujeu

Dominique Louis Féréol Papety (12 August 1815 – 19 September 1849) was a French painter. He is best known for his canvases and drawings on Greek themes, both Classical and contemporary, and is considered an early member of the Neo-Grec movement

In 1835, he enrolled at the École des Beaux-arts in Paris, where he studied with Léon Cogniet. The following year, he and Charles Octave Blanchard [fr] shared first place for the Prix de Rome. Papety's entry depicted Moses striking water from a stone with his staff.

He spent the years from 1837 to 1842 at the Villa Medicis. One of his teachers, Ingres, said that "...he was already a master when he touched a brush". His first exhibition at the Salon was in 1843.

Papety became a close friend of François Sabatier-Ungher, an art critic who was interested in antiquities. Together, they took a trip to Greece in 1846. He visited all twenty-three monasteries on Mount Athos, made hundreds of drawings and, the following year, published a combination travelogue and report in the Revue des deux Mondes.

He took another trip to Greece, in 1847, and made sketches that were later used to decorate the Panthéon in Paris. In addition, he documented archaeological sites and made ethnographic studies of the local customs and costumes. Following a suggestion by the Duc de Montpensier, he created a scene commemorating the Royal Family's visit to Athens in 1845. When he returned to Marseille, he was ill with cholera. He appeared to improve, but occasional bouts of fever recurred and worsened during a stay in Camargue.

The disease ultimately proved to be fatal and he died in Marseille in 1849, aged only thirty-four. This was after the Second Cholera Pandemic had reached France, so his funeral was unattended. His remaining works were sold at an auction. More on Dominique Louis Féréol Papety

01 Work, The Art of War, Albert Ferdinand Le Dru's Félicité & Théophile Fernig - Warrior sisters, with footnotes

Albert Ferdinand LE DRU (1848-?).
Théophile and Félicité de FERNIG, aides-de-camp of Dumouriez, c. 1903
Oil on canvas
112 x 170 cm
Private collection

Sold for  €9,000 EUR in Jan 2013

“Gentlemen, though our sex is accused of weakness and timidity, although we are excused from the honor of the oath, as well as civic inscription, we nevertheless dare to offer our country our arms and our lives; therefore, we beg you gentlemen, my younger sister and I, not only to register us on the volunteer list of the National guard of our city, but also to take the civil oath, to be faithful to our nation, to the law and to the king to hold with all our strength the constitution of the kingdom. We are happy to pay homage to the Homeland and to share the victory with the brave volunteers and our brothers in arms.”

Félicité (1770-1841) and her sister Théophile (1775-1819) Fernig were two sisters who fought in the French army and distinguished themselves during the French Revolutionary Wars.

22 years old Félicité and 17 years old Théophile fought against the intrusions of the Austrian enemy soldiers, preventing pillage and plundering. They first tried to prevent their father from discovering their secret. The masquerade lasted only for a few days. One night, the sisters fought in an ambush against the enemy. Their father saw them with their sabers and firearms, faces smeared with smoke and lips blackened by bullet cartridges that they tore open with their teeth. After recognizing them, he decided that the should be allowed to fight.

The sisters and their father then joined General Dumouriez’s troops. At the battle of Jemappes, on November 6 1792, Théophile shot 2 Hungarian grenadiers and took prisoner their commanding officer. Meanwhile, Félicité was “in the thickest of the mélée”, rallied Dumouriez’s retreating battalions, charging on the battlefield “holding her bridle in her teeth and with a pistol in each hand”.

In April 1793, Dumouriez betrayed the French Republic and joined the Austrian army. Trusting him and accustomed to obeying, the sisters went with him without realizing what was happening. When they realized what Dumouriez had done, they left his side to keep fighting for the Republic. Ir was too late, they were considered as his accomplices and briefly imprisoned before they could join their family again.

The two sisters then had to leave France. Félicité married Jean-François Vanderwallen, possibly the Belgian officer that she had saved on the battlefield while Théophile chose to stay celibate. The two sisters fought for the right to return to France which they finally obtained in 1801.They nevertheless returned to Brussels where they both died, Théophile in 1819, Félicité in 1841. James Hope (1818-1892) was born in Scotland and, following the death of his mother, accompanied his father to Canada. At the age of twelve he was orphaned in a cholera outbreak. Soon apprenticed to a wagon maker in Fairhaven, Vermont, he quickly demonstrated that his native intelligence and artistic talent precluded a tradesman’s career. With money saved he attended the Castleton Vermont Seminary for a year and took up portrait painting. He painted in Rutland, Vermont in 1843, but moved to the more lucrative market of Montreal from 1844 to 1846. Upon leaving Montreal, Hope reestablished in Castleton and devoted himself to landscape painting. In 1849 Frederic Church worked for a summer in nearby Clarendon Springs, and it seems likely that he influenced Hope to focus his attentions on New York City. Hope sent a Castleton landscape to the 1849 exhibition of the American Art Union and by 1854 he had work accepted by the National Academy of Design. Thereafter, for more than twenty-five years, he was a frequent contributor to the exhibitions there and to the Brooklyn Art Association. An occasional exhibitor in Boston, he also sent paintings to shows in Philadelphia, Buffalo, Cincinnati, Detroit, Utica, Chicago, and St. Louis.

Hope was among the group of artists who saw active duty in the Civil War, participating in eleven battles. On March 11, 1864, the following appeared in the Newark Daily Advertiser.

Captain James Hope was 43 years old and a member of the 2nd Vermont Infantry. Hope had taken part in a dozen engagements prior to Antietam, but disabled by illness, he was assigned to sideline duties as a scout and mapmaker. He recorded in his sketchbook the battle scenes before his eyes, and then after the battle converted his sketches into a series of five large paintings.

After the war, Hope acquired popularity as a painter of battle scenes. By 1872, however, he built a studio and art gallery in Watkins Glen, New York. There he spent the last twenty years of his life as artist laureate of the water and wind-hewn geologic formations found in the vicinity.

Hope was elected an Associate Member of the National Academy of Design in 1871. More on Captain James Hope

01 Work, The Art of War, Vasily Vereshchagin's Through the fire, with footnotes

Vasily Vereshchagin  (1842–1904)
Through the fire; Napoleon I in Russia 1812, c 1899-1900
Oil on canvas
202 × 320 centimeters
Vasily Museum of Patriotic War 1812

Napoleon, with the help of soldiers, moves through the fire towards the Arbat; The name of a part of the city district located in the central administrative district of Moscow.

Vasily Vereshchagin carefully studied the history of the French invasion of Russia in 1812, paying particular attention to the military-historical realities. Through source materials and studies devoted to the invasion and travels to the most important places of the battles of the Imperial Russian Army with the French Grande Armée, he created a series of twenty paintings, each measuring 202 × 320 centimeters, showing the struggle of the Russian people against the French Emperor Napoleon. More on this painting

Vasily Vasilyevich Vereshchagin, Vereshchagin also spelled Verestchagin, (born October 14, 1842, Cherepovets, Russia—died March 31, 1904, Port Arthur, China), was a Russian painter noted for his war scenes.

Vereshchagin attended the St. Petersburg Academy and studied in Paris. Devoting his life to travel, he acquired subjects for paintings from on-the-spot impressions in the Caucasus, in Crimea, along the Danube River, and in Turkistan with the Russian army. In the Balkans during the Russo-Turkish War Vereshchagin was provided with the themes for some of his famous war pictures. He also painted in Syria and in Palestine and between 1885 and 1903 traveled in Russia, the United States, and Japan. He died during the Russo-Japanese War, aboard the flagship of Admiral Stepan Osipovich Makarov.

Vereshchagin’s paintings of scenes during the invasion of Russia by Napoleon in 1812 enjoyed extraordinary popularity; innumerable reproductions of them were made. The pacifist and humanitarian movement of the time made use of his painting of a pyramid of skulls (“Apotheosis of War,” 1871; State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow). His works are to be seen in Moscow at the State Tretyakov Gallery and in St. Petersburg at the State Museum of Russian Art. More on Vasily Vasilyevich Vereshchagin

02 Works, The Art of War, Francisco Goya's The Second of May 1808, and and Joaquín Sorolla's The death of Pedro Velarde y Santillán, with footnotes

Francisco Goya (1746–1828)
The Second of May 1808 or The Charge of the Mamelukes, c. 1814
Oil on canvas
height: 266 cm (104.7 in); idth: 345 cm (11.3 ft)
Museo del Prado

The city had been under the occupation of Napoleon's army since 23 March of the same year. King Charles IV had been forced by the Spanish people during the Tumult of Aranjuez to abdicate in favor of his son Ferdinand VII, and at the time of the uprising both were in the French city of Bayonne at the insistence of Napoleon. An attempt by the French general Joachim Murat to move Charles IV's daughter and her children along with his youngest son to Bayonne sparked a rebellion.

The Dos de Mayo or Second of May Uprising took place in Madrid, Spain, on 2–3 May 1808. The rebellion, mainly by civilians, with some isolated military action by junior officers, was against the occupation of the city by French troops, and was violently repressed by the French Imperial forces, with hundreds of public executions. More on Second of May Uprising

Joaquín Sorolla  (1863–1923)
The death of Pedro Velarde y Santillán during the defence of the Monteleon Artillery Barracks, 1814, c. 1884
Oil on canvas
height: 400 cm (13.1 ft); width: 580 cm (19 ft)
Museo del Prado

Defense of the Monteleón Artillery Park, in Madrid, by the troops under the command of Luís Daoiz (1767-1808) and Pedro Velarde (1779-1808). on May 2, 1808, against French soldiers, at the beginning of the War of Independence (1808-1814).

Francisco Goya was a talented Spanish painter and printmaker, and is considered one of the last of the Old Masters of painting, as well as the first of the moderns. He began his apprenticeship in painting at the age of 14, and his talent was quickly recognized. He first submitted entries to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in 1763, and then later in 1766, both of which were denied. But, in 1771, he traveled to Rome and won second place in a painting competition and secured employment designing tapestries at the Royal Tapestry Factory. He completed over 42 patterns, which were used to cover the walls in the newly built palaces around Madrid, giving him an immediate royal audience

In the 1780’2 he became friendly with the crown prince of Spain, spending two summers with him and his family, paintings portraits, and expanding his circle of royal patrons. He was given a salaried position as a court painter in 1786, and in 1799 was made the first court painter, painting for the king and his family, as well as the Spanish nobility.

Between the years of 1792 and 1793, Goya suffered from a mysterious illness, which made him deaf, and affected his mental behavior. Some current medical scientists believe that his deafness was a result of the lead in which he used in his paints, whereas others believe it may have been some sort of viral encephalitis. Either way, its effect on Goya cannot be understated. After his illness, he became withdrawn and introspective, and began painting a series of disturbing paintings on the walls of his house in Quinta del Sordo. His earlier themes of merry festivals and cartoons changed into depictions of war and corpses, representing a darkening of his mood. Whether this has more to do with the French declaration of war on Spain or some medical problem leading to mental disturbance is up to debate.

As such, his legacy ranges from simple portraits of the royal family to devilish portrayals of demons eating their young. His legacy also has inspired several operas, a piano suite, and a number of feature films. More on Francisco Goya

Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (27 February 1863 – 10 August 1923) was a Spanish painter. Sorolla excelled in the painting of portraits, landscapes, and monumental works of social and historical themes. His most typical works are characterized by a dexterous representation of the people and landscape under the sunlight of his native land. More on Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida

01 Work, The Art of War, Safia Latif's David and Goliath, with footnotes

Safia Latif
David and Goliath
Oil on panel

“That’s why the 12 year old Palestinian boy can get in front of an Isr*eli tank with a rock, because he knows there is a Power beyond that tank, a Power that can’t be seen that’s beyond and more powerful than that tank.” - Amir Abdul Malik Ali

Safia Latif is an oil painter based in California. Her work creatively reimagines Islamic narratives and concepts using visible brushwork and an emphasis on light and color. Latif has pioneered the practice of “Islamicate Impressionism,” a novel style that is recognizably painterly and conceptually draws on the social and cultural phenomena associated with the Muslim world from Morocco to Indonesia. Latif’s work emerges as a departure from traditional Islamic art known for hyperdetailed miniature paintings and calligraphic and arabesque designs. Instead, she focuses on visual sensations of Islamic themes, highlighting the inherently cosmopolitan nature of Islam and conveying a sense wonder and beauty.

Latif earned an MA in Middle Eastern Studies and began a PhD in religion, focusing on the notion of piety as a form of social capital for Muslim women in the medieval world. Though she enjoyed academia, she was always drawn to art and decided instead to use her knowledge of Islamic history to inform a meaningful body of work. Her paintings reflect a personal openness to faith likely owing to her diasporic background as the daughter of an American Russian Jewish convert to Islam and a Pakistani Muslim immigrant. 01 Work, The Art of War, Richard Jack's First World War, The Taking of Vimy Ridge, Easter Monday 1917, with footnotes

Richard Jack  (1866–1952)
First World War, The Taking of Vimy Ridge, Easter Monday 1917, c. 1919
Oil and oil painting on canvas
height: 364 cm (11.9 ft); width: 591 cm (19.3 ft)
Canadian War Museum

The battle at Vimy Ridge in April 1917 is Canada's most famous. Richard Jack's depiction focuses on the technology that enabled the assault to succeed. Of Canada's many First World War battles, the successful assault at Vimy Ridge in April 1917 is the most famous. Victory cost more than ten thousand casualties. "Battle Vimy Ridge," Lieutenant H. L. Scott of the Canadian Engineers wrote in his diary, "Heavy return fire. The whole earth seemed to be in the air. When in air, came down to be blown up again. Worst battle in history of war to date. Hundreds blinded, arms and legs off. One man without arms and legs still living." Richard Jack's depiction avoids this tragic cost and concentrates instead on the technology that enabled the assault to succeed.

In this painting, he depicts the crew of an 18-pounder field gun firing at German positions on Vimy Ridge. To the left, wounded soldiers move past the gun towards the rear. More on this painting

Richard Jack RA RI (15 February 1866 – 30 June 1952)
was a British painter of portraits, figure subjects, interiors and landscapes, and prominent war artist for Canada.

He studied at York School of Art before winning a national scholarship to the Royal College of Art in 1886. There he won a gold medal and in 1888 a travelling scholarship to the Académie Julian. On his return to London in the early 1890s, he worked for a time on the staff of The Idler and for Cassell's Magazine as a black-and-white artist. He was awarded a silver medal at the 1900 Paris International Exhibition and at the Carnegie International in Pittsburgh in 1914. Jack was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy of Arts in February 1914 and a full Academician in 1920. In 1916, he accepted a commission in the Canadian Army to paint for the Canadian War Records Office, becoming Canada's first official war artist.

In the 1920s Jack became fond of Canada, making several visits there with his family. After his daughter met and married the Ottawan businessman Victor Whitehead, Jack and his wife moved to Montreal. Inspired by Canadian scenery, particularly the Rockies, Jack took to landscape paintings, as well as portraits.

More than 40 Richard Jack paintings hang in UK public collections including one of composer Colin McAlpin in the collection of the Leicester Arts and Museums Service.

He died Monday, June 30, 1952. More on Richard Jack

Extremely complicated composition, with figures moving in opposite directions. In the color and the reproduction of the physical, the strong influence of Peter Paul Rubens (1577 - 1640) can be seen, with whom he had worked together at the festive decoration in Ghent. All these stylistic aspects suggest the attribution. So too, this painting is characterized by a turbulent concentration of bodies - here hellish figures - against which the youthfully heroically portrayed Saint Michael fights. His movement from top left to bottom right, corresponding to the light incidence in the picture. His outstretched right arm holding the flaming sword, the left the round shield. It is striking here that the male figure, which is at the top of a dragon, has almost portraited facial features, which gives reason to suppose that this is an allegory of the victory over a fallen opponent. The barb in the right hand of the fallen is an attribute of the Greek Hades, ruler of the underworld. More on this painting

ARCHANGEL MICHAEL, is an archangel in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. In Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, and Lutheran traditions, he is called "Saint Michael the Archangel" and "Saint Michael". In the Oriental Orthodox and Eastern Orthodox traditions, he is called "Taxiarch Archangel Michael" or simply "Archangel Michael".

In the New Testament Michael leads God's armies against Satan's forces in the Book of Revelation, where during the war in heaven he defeats Satan. In the Epistle of Jude Michael is specifically referred to as "the archangel Michael". Christian sanctuaries to Michael appeared in the 4th century, when he was first seen as a healing angel, and then over time as a protector and the leader of the army of God against the forces of evil. By the 6th century, devotions to Archangel Michael were widespread both in the Eastern and Western Churches. Over time, teachings on Michael began to vary among Christian denominations. More Archangel Michael

The 17th century sparked a golden age for art in Naples. It was a period of extraordinary achievement in painting characterized by a level of originality and quality that placed Naples at the centre of international artistic taste. An almost continuous quantity of remarkable artistic accomplishments in Naples at this time left an indelible imprint on the history of European art. Such artists as Artemisia Gentileschi, Francesco Solimena, Luca Giordano, Francesco Guarino, Mico Spadaro, Salvatore Rosa, Jusepe De Ribera and more. The paintings depict religious and secular subjects, still life, portraiture, and 17th century city life in Naples, including the ravages of rebellion and plague, and moments of great triumph. More on the Neapolitan masters

02 Works, The Art of War, Alphonse de Neuville's Les dernières cartouches/ The Last Cartridges, with footnotes

Alphonse-Marie-Adolphe de Neuville  (1836–1885)
The Last Cartridges, Prussian War in 1870, c. 1873
Oil on canvas
Bazeilles, museum of the House of the last cartridges

September 1st 1870, and French soldiers, besieged inside a house in the Ardennes' village of Bazeilles, are fighting a desperate battle against the Prussian invader. Surrounded by the enemy, they keep up the fight to the very last bullet. The following day, a few miles away in Sedan, Napoleon III was to surrender.

Alfred de Neuville, considered along with Edouard Detaille to be the top military artist of the Third Republic, seized on this famous episode to compose a tragic scene exalting the men's courage. This much-reproduced painting ranked amongst the most popular works of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It became the icon of patriotic heroism through which vanquished France might recover her wounded pride. More on this painting

Alphonse de Neuville was one of those painters who was spared the difficulties often associated with the life of an artist. Only his premature death matches the cliché. Despite his sheltered youth, de Neuville was not an artist for pacifists; after all, he was born in a period of war and himself served as an officer in the French army.

The famous battle painter was born in 1836 in Saint-Omer, the son of a rich landed nobility. The small town is located on the northeast coast of France, not far from the famous port of Calais. De Neuville received a good school education and was not at all interested in painting during his childhood and youth, but showed great enthusiasm for the many technical achievements that began to change the world in the mid-19th century . This passion is also reflected in his professional aspirations. After obtaining his high school diploma, he decided to become an engineer and attended the Lorient Naval Academy. Here de Neuville not only cultivated contact with other cadets, but he also came into contact for the first time with scientists, philosophers and artists. The young Alphonse was particularly impressed by the history and portrait painter Francois Edouard Picot , whose student he eventually became. Picot maintains contacts with Parisian salons and introduces his student to these environments. This is also how he came into contact with Eugene Delacroix , an important pioneer of Impressionism. In his Parisian studio, de Neuville continued his artistic training and was able to present his first major work, "Episode of the Crimean War", to the Parisian public a year later.

He then began working as a designer for publishing houses and illustrated works by well-known authors such as Alexandre Dumas and Jules Verne. His career as an artist was interrupted in 1870/1871 by the Franco-Prussian War, in which he participated as an officer. The experiences of the war must have had a strong influence on him and therefore determined his favorite subject. In post-war Paris, he quickly progressed to become a highly respected battle painter. He received numerous awards for his work and was first made a knight, then an officer of the Legion of Honor. His patriotic style is part of the era of moral renewal that France experienced after the lost war, even if modern criticism often accuses the artist of glorifying war. His powerful and optimistic paintings are still admired today.

The best known are the two paintings "The Last Cartridges" and "The Cemetery of Saint-Privat", whose great success he owes to his admission to the Legion of Honor. More on Alphonse de Neuville

Louis Paul Pierre Dumont was an accomplished French engraver and painter who is predominantly known for his wood engravings after eminent contemporaries including Gustave Doré. He also produced numerous woodcuts for newspapers such as L'Illustration, Le Journal Illustré and Le Voleur. He exhibited several times at the Paris Salon. More on Louis Paul Pierre Dumont
