This lithograph features one of Picasso's favorite themes: the circus. This is the final state of this image, printed in 1961. Picasso first drew this image in 1957, completing it four years later. Several dates can be seen in the plate, indicating the many states that this print went through before Picasso decided on this definitive version: dated upper right in red "28.11.57" and "13.12.57," lower right in green "13.12.57," and upper right in black "6.3.61." The green and red are strong here, with lighter hints of black. The image measures 20.25 x 27.75 in. (51.4 x 70.5 cm.), and the sheet measures 22 x 30 in. (55.8 x 76.2 cm.).
